The situation in Maval near Pune, where three people were killed in police firing on Tuesday, was peaceful and under control, official sources said on Wednesday.

A magisterial inquiry has been ordered into the firing in which three farmers were killed and one seriously injured, said District Collector Vikas Deshmukh.

He added that farmers who were seriously injured in the firing were being treated at a hospital at Talegaon.

Nearly 50 police personnel, including ten policemen, were injured in stone pelting during the farmers' protest on the Mumbai-Pune Expressway. The farmers were protesting against a pipeline project on Pavna dam to facilitate water supply to the industrial township of Pimpri-Chinchwad.

Several private and police vehicles were damaged in the violence that resulted in the expressway being blocked for hours on Tuesday.

Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar on Wednesday visited the injured protestors in hospitals to inquire about their condition.

Shiv Sena spokesperson and Member of Legislative Council Neelam Gorhe demanded Pawar's resignation over the incident.
