November 19, 2012 16:40 IST

The Thane police has reportedly arrested a 21-year-old girl for criticising the total shutdown in the city for Bal Thackeray's funeral on Facebook.

According to a report in the Mumbai Mirror newspaper, the police also arrested a girl who 'liked' the comment on the social networking site.

The report said that the duo were booked under Section 295 (a) of the India Penal Code (for hurting religious sentiments) and Section 64 (a) of the Information Technology Act, 2000.

Though the girl withdrew her comment and apologised, a mob of some 2,000 Shiv Sena workers attacked and ransacked her uncle's orthopaedic clinic at Palghar, the report added.

The two girls were granted bail within hours of being arrested, after they paid a surety of Rs 15,000 each.

Do you think the arrest of the girls violates the basic fundemental right of freedom of expression or were the police justified in taking such action?
