PM writes to Punjab CM on US gurdwara shooting

September 11, 2012 20:29 IST
Prime Minister Manmohan Singh has written to Punjab Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal, appraising him that India has taken up the issue of shooting in a United States gurdwara with Washington.

"The prime minister has informed the chief minister that the Government of India is engaging the US administration on the issue," an official spokesperson said.

In the letter received on Monday, the PM informed Badal that the Centre had acted upon the issues raised by the Punjab CM in his letter, he said.

"This senseless act of violence in a place of worship has no place in any society and has rightly drawn condemnation from India, the US and around the world," the spokesperson said quoting PM's letter.

In his letter, Dr Singh also informed that President Barack Obama called him on August 8 to express shock and sorrow over the incident, and appreciated the role played by Sikh community in the development of United States.

PM's letter came in response to a written communication sent by Badal on August 6, in which he pressed for more measures by the US administration for the safety of Sikh community.

In his letter, Badal had also requested Dr Singh to ask the US administration to ensure a full and prompt inquiry into the August 5 incident, in which six worshippers were killed.
