Asserting that it was a nation's duty to look after its children, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on Thursday promised to ensure that all children in the country get proper nutrition, education and other facilities.
"A country's future depends on its children. Hence, it is our duty to ensure that there is no stone unturned in their care," Singh said after giving away bravery awards to 21 children in New Delhi.
"It is our endeavour to see that each and every child in the country gets proper nutrition, education and all other facilities," he said, adding, "I promise that we will leave no stone unturned to ensure this".
Addressing the children, he said that the nation was very proud of them and "You should be happy that you would be attending the Republic Day parade as it is a very special day," he added.
The Prime Minister presented 21 children with bravery awards, including three girls who refused marriage at an early age. Other recipients included children who saved people from stampede and drowning.
Dr Singh remembered those who were awarded posthumously, saying their sacrifice will not go in vain.
Among the dignitaries present on the occasion were UPA Chairperson Sonia Gandhi and the High Commissioners of United Kingdom and Bangladesh.
Gandhi and the Prime Minister later interacted with the children and congratulated them for the awards.
