July 18, 2012 00:19 IST

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on Tuesday expressed grief over the passing away of veteran socialist leader Mrinal Gore, who was also a former member of the Lok Sabha, describing her as an inspiration for many generations of social activists.

"I am deeply saddened to learn of the passing away of Shrimati Mrinal Gore who has been a zealous democrat, tireless worker for civic infrastructure and an inspiration to many generations of social activists," Singh said in his condolence message.

"Her social reform oriented agenda and efforts showed the way for the independent Indian woman of today. Shrimati Gore's contribution to the Lok Sabha proceedings will be long remembered for the progressive vision she brought into several debates," he said.

Singh also said that the nation would remain indebted to Gore for her work for the poor, and the promotion of civil rights, women's rights and communal harmony.

Gore, 84, who had earned the sobriquet 'Paniwali Bai' for her efforts in bringing drinking water supply to Goregaon, a Mumbai suburb, passed away today after a brief illness.
