Is this how we treat our teachers?

November 24, 2014 15:37 IST

Every year on Teachers’ Day, we praise out teachers, shower them with adulation. Yet, our teachers continue to struggle for their rights such as adequate salaries and other facilities.

In a similar instance, hundreds of women teachers belonging to the Indira Kranti Patham programme were manhandled by the police on Monday when they tried to hold a dharna outside the collectorate in Hyderabad.

The volunteers, mostly women, were carrying out the dharna demanding payment of salaries due for the last 17 months, increase of salary and provision of other facilities such as health and food security cards.

The teachers were tugged and pulled at by cops who tried to stop them from protesting and tried to dispel them from the streets.

Protesters, however, fought with the cops and continued to remain in their spot, and promised to stay on till the government paid heed to their demands.
