Rana escape: DIG transferred, DSP suspended

February 23, 2004 22:34 IST

The government has transferred Deputy Inspector General of Tihar jail and suspended one more of its Deputy Superintendent of Police in connection with the dramatic escape of Sher Singh Rana, alleged killer of dacoit-turned-politician Phoolan Devi.

DIG Mukesh Prasad has been shifted as Director Technical Education with immediate effect and has been replaced by Devender Singh, who held that post, prison sources told PTI in Delhi on Monday.

The authorities also suspended Deputy Superintendent of Police Ved Prakash Garg, the sources said.

Garg is suspected to have links with anti-social elements and was on February 13 found in the company of two notorious criminals -- Satender Pal Singh alias Twinkle and Yogesh Saini alias Yogi, they said.

Garg is being interrogated by Crime Branch in connection with Rana's escape but has not been arrested so far, they said.

The government has also transferred Tihar Jail's Resident Medical Officer (RMO) Aruna Jain in a related case in which Rana's co-accused in Phoolan's murder allegedly consumed 'phenyl' in the prison four days after Rana's escape.

She has been asked to report in the office of Director, Health Services, with immediate effect.
