Ten teams of National Disaster Response Force comprising 307 personnel and 59 boats have been deployed in six flood-affected districts of Orissa.

The teams are carrying out rescue and relief operations in Jajpur, Bhadrak, Kendrapara, Baleswar, Mayurbhanj and Keonjhar districts which have been hit due to floods in the rivers Boodabalang, Suwarnrekha, Brahmani and Batrani.

"The Central government is closely monitoring the situation and is in constant touch with Orissa government for extending the required support and assistance," a Home Ministry official said.

A total of four helicopters were deployed for air-dropping of the food packets and rescue operations. On Monday, another two MI-17 helicopters have been deployed and two more helicopters are under deployment by the Indian Air Force.

Out of the ten teams, six teams with 35 boats were deployed at Jajpur, three with 18 boats at Kendrapara and one team with six boats at Bhadrak.

In Uttar Pradesh, the state government has deployed two teams of Provincial Armed Constabulary in Varanasi,  Jaunpur, Sonbhadra, Mirzapur and Chandauli where due to a cyclonic depression, heavy rainfall has caused flooding.

The Uttar Pradesh government has requested that NDRF be kept on standby.

"The situation has considerably improved and the water level is receding," the official said. So far, 12 people have lost their lives in Uttar Pradesh due to floods.
