Leader of the opposition Lal Kishenchand Advani on Monday said that the statement of Arun Singh, one of Rajiv Gandhi's trusted aides, on the Bofors controversy has proved beyond doubt that money had changed hands in the arms deal.
The move is seen as a feeble attempt at covering up the embarrassment for the Bharatiya Janata Party caused by former external affairs minister Jaswant Singh's flip flops about his allegation that an American mole was active in the Prime Minister's Office in the Narasimha Rao government.
"Rajiv Gandhi's most trusted man, Arun Singh, who had maintained silence on the issue for 18 years, has said that though he did not take any money, some commission was paid," Advani said.
Arun Singh's comments came in an interview with Shekhar Gupta on NDTV.
Advani said that the truth must be found out because of the circumstances in which Ottavio Quattrochi was allowed to flee the country and the speed with which he managed to transfer the money from his accounts to his wife's account.
"We would raise the issue in Parliament," Advani concluded.
