Obstruction of Parliament not undemocratic: Jaitley

January 30, 2011 15:55 IST

Senior Bharatiya Janata Party leader Arun Jaitley has said that obstruction of Parliament is not undemocratic.

"Parliament's job is to conduct discussions. But many a times, Parliament is used to ignore issues and in such situations, the obstruction of Parliament is in the favour of democracy. Therefore, Parliamentary obstruction is not undemocratic," said Jaitley

Jaitley further said that he hopes the central government would stick to its word and discuss all issues including corruption in the upcoming budget session of Parliament scheduled to begin from February 21.

Jaitley also claimed that the Congress led United Progressive Alliance is not a strong alliance capable of ruling the country.

"There is a drift in the UPA government and their vision of state craft is also weak," added Jaitley.

Commenting on the appointment of Chief Vigilance Commissioner P J Thomas, Jaitley said that Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and Home Minister P Chidambaram backed the appointment of the controversial bureaucrat as CVC.

Asked about issues of corruption concerning the BJP in Karnataka, Jaitley agreed to probe the matter at party level.

He described the allegations against state Chief Minister B S Yeddyurappa as politically motivated.

"No institution or judicial body has pointed fingers at the chief minister. Instead, it is the governor of the state who sanctioned prosecution which is apparently politically motivated," he added.
