Joint press conference sees a blunt PM

The joint press conference of Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and United States President Barack Obama signals the deepening of the Indo-US relationship.

The takeaway at the end of the interaction was that both the Indian and American media found Dr Singh very coherent, direct and a little bit blunt as well.

When he said that India was not afraid of the K word, in response to a question on Kashmir being the flashpoint between India and Pakistan, it led to a smirk on the faces of Foreign Ministers SM Krishna and Foreign Secretary SS Menon, who were seated in front of the dais.

And when he said India was not in the business of stealing jobs, the Indian side could not believe its ears because such bluntness is rarely used by Dr Singh, who normally downplays his arguments.

The overall feeling among the media after the joint press conference was that Dr Singh has responded well to the controversy over Pakistan that was created by Obama's soft handling of the issue at the St Xavier's college town hall in Mumbai on Sunday.

Finally, with Obama reserving comment on India's inclusion in the United Nations Security Council, there is immense speculation that some kind of support will be announced in his Parliament speech slated for later in the day.
