People can soon experience swimming in the Mumbai's beaches without the fear of getting drowned as the Mumbai Fire Brigade have proposed to the civic body to demarcate swimming and non-swimming zones for swimmers at the beaches.

"We are mulling to demarcate swimming and non-swimming zones for swimmers at the city's beaches. We are in the process of mapping out safety and non-safety zones. This would surely avert incidents of drowning," Chief Fire Officer Uday Tatkare told PTI in Mumbai.

On the lines of Goa, the Mumbai Fire Brigade department is taking help of beach safety association and the institute of water sports, Goa, who are working together on this project.

"For this we require couple of equipments like watch towers, boats, safety jackets, neon signs boards and red flags. Lifeguards will also be stationed at beaches.

Once all these equipments are procured, the project will be implemented soon," Tatkare said.

Tatkare further explained, on the lines of traffic department, neon signs will have messages in different languages -- English, Hindi and Marathi on the height of the tide and time, information on rainfall and weather.

"Apart from neon sign boards, red flags will also go up as warnings during stormy weather and when the tide is above 4.5 meter. Also, lifeguards will be stationed at the beaches with rescue equipments. Watch towers will also be constructed at beaches," Tatkare said.

A civic official confirmed that the proposal has been put forward by the fire department. "We are working on the proposal as to how the infrastructure and equipments must be set up. However, the onus of building watch towers on the beaches lies with respective zones," the official said.
