Women drivers for tourists

Good news for tourists visiting India.

The Ministery of Tourism has introduced 'Project Priyadarshini' -- an endeavour to bring women into the core area of the service sector, and take advantage of the tourism boom in the country.

It is a project where women could be employed from driving taxis to running a taxi service, restaurants or cafeterias, information and facilitation kiosks.

Considering tour guides in India are not very proficient, the tourism ministery decided that wives of retired service officers, who are educated and often well-versed in foreign languages, could assist 'high-end tourists' by guiding their tours and shopping.

The ministry also hopes to facilitate self-employment for women.
