Naxal violence claimed maximum lives this year: Govt

Till July this year, Left Wing extremism claimed the lives of 183 civilians and 84 security forces personnel while the corresponding figures for Jammu and Kashmir stood at 7 and 6 respectively and in the northeast it was reported as 49 and 7 lives for the same period.

Minister of State for Home Affairs Jitendra Singh gave this information in a written reply in Lok Sabha on Tuesday. The maximum violent incidents were reported in naxal-affected areas (911) while in Jammu and Kashmir 133 incidents were reported and in the NE a total of 666 incidents were recorded during the same period.

Naxal violence, according to the reply, had claimed a total of 606 lives (464 civilians and 142 security personnel) during 2011. The casualty figures for last year were again much higher in the Naxal violence affected areas as compared to terror and insurgency related deaths in Jammu and Kashmir and the northeast.

While 64 people were killed (31 civilians and 33 security personnel) during last year in J and K, 102 people (70 civilians and 32 security personnel) where killed in northeast during the same period.
