July 13, 2010 02:55 IST

The Gujarat police have arrested a former Janashakti leader Amar from Kushaiguda area in Hyderabad on Monday evening, official sources said.

A police team from Surat picked up Kura Devender alias Amar in connection with a case, they said, adding the former Naxal leader was likely to be taken to Surat on Tuesday.

A senior state Intelligence Official told PTI "the news of Amar's arrest is true. Amar has been picked up by Gujarat police from a location here as he was wanted in some case in Surat. The Gujarat Police have also informed the local police about Amar's arrest and he is likely to be taken to Surat on Tuesday."

Gujarat's Navsari Superintendent of Police Premvir Singh, who is heading special investigation team (SIT) probing network of CPI (Maoist) in the state, said that the SIT probing network of Maoists in the state had filed a 1,800-page chargsheet last month against 11 out of the 12 persons arrested, in the Surat district rural court.

According to the chargesheet, all the accused have been booked under various sections of the IPC which include criminal conspiracy (120 B), waging war against government (121 A), Sedition (124 A), promoting enmity between different groups (153 A).

Amar, who was earlier the CPI– ML (Janashakti) state secretary and its central committee member, was arrested in Pune in 2008 by Karimnagar police and was released from jail in August last.

While underground, he was the emissary of Janashakti in peace talks organised by the Andhra Pradesh government with Naxalites in 2004. Before going underground, he actively participated in PDSU activities and between 1985 and 1993, worked as Janashakti zonal committee secretary of Karimnagar and Medak districts.

Amar was allegedly involved in 13 murders in Karimnagar district and several other cases in various parts of Andhra Pradesh, according to official sources.

The Gujarat police had in February this year filed a first comprehensive FIR against CPI (Maoist) in the state to investigate their plans, activities and to identify persons involved in spread of the banned organisation in South Gujarat region.
