February 20, 2013 01:29 IST

A businessman, who rashly drove his Mercedes Benz and injured five pedestrians before escaping from the spot and subsequently sent his driver to take blame on him, was on Tuesday arrested, the police said.

Falgun Shroff, who deals in furniture goods and resides in Lokhandwala area, was arrested for the alleged hit-and-run case.

"Shroff was produced before a local court which granted him bail for Rs 10,000," Sharad Borse, Senior Inspector at Versova Police Station, told PTI.

The five victims, all aspiring actors and scriptwriters, were walking on the side of the road in Versova on Monday early morning when the Mercedes knocked them down. The car also rammed into a police barricade, but managed to escape from the spot.

During the probe, the investigators found a part of the number plate, which fell off due to impact of the accident. This led the police to Shroff, the owner of the vehicle.

Incidentally, the police did not find Shroff or his family members at his residence. They tried calling on his mobile number, but he had switched it off.

After a few hours, the Shroff's driver claimed the responsibility of the accident. However, police did not buy the driver's claims and began checking Shroff's mobile network movements and his phone calls.

The probe pointed out Shroff could be behind the wheels at the time of accident and was alone in the vehicle. Shroff was called in for questioning during which he confessed to have knocked the pedestrians following which he was nabbed.
