Two accused arresed in different cases of chain snatching were rushed to JJ Hospital in Mumbai after they allegedly tried to commit suicide by consuming poison in police custody. The accused have been identified as 19-year-old Shadab Sheikh and 21-year old Shehzad Khan. They were in the custody of the LT Marg police.

The two were found in an unconsious state inside the police lockup on Saturday afternoon. The fact that two accused in police lock-up had access to poison and also consumed it without the policemen on gaurd noticing this is a serious breach of security.

Shocked and embarrased by the development, police officials were refusing to reveal any details of the incident as many uncomfortable questions are being raised about the incident. Moreover the lockups in Mumbai are monitored round-the-clock by closed circuit cameras.

Police officials said that they would be looking in to the CCTV footage to find out the sequence of events, as to how did the two procure the poison and when did they consume it.

The two were arrested in different cases of chain snatching and their police custody was sought from the court to interrogate them. Top police officials are learnt to have ordered an inquiry into the incident after allegations that the two tried to commit suicide as the police were pressurising them to admit to crimes that they did not commit.

Incidentally, LT Marg has been in the news in the past also for all the wrong reasons as its senior inspector Arun Borude was booked on the charges of raping a minor girl.
