Mizo Students Union, the largest student body in the state, has threatened the state government with an indefinite economic blockade, following the government's 'mute stance' on its protests against the raising of pension age to 60.
MSU president Buansanga said the government had left them with no choice but to carry out another agitation, as it did not pay any attention to its protest bandh of October 13.
"Since the government has refused to acknowledge our protest, we need to do something drastic to get its attention. We have decided that our next course of action is to organise an economic blockade," he added.
"A meeting of office bearers on Monday would decide on the date," he said. He, however, warned that the date would remain a closely guarded secret until the last moment, as the government would 'do anything' to stop them.
He also said the blockade would be mainly on Aizawl-Silchar stretch of National Highway 54.
"We know that the blockade will cause great hardship to the people. However, we are left with no other choice as we believe that pension age extension would harm the educated youth in the long run," Buansanga said.
"The blockade, if carried out, would be an indefinite one until the students or the government give in," he warned.
