Lawyers for the family of a Brazilian, shot dead by police on a tube train in London last month after wrongly suspecting him to be a bomber, have asked investigators to carry out their inquiry quickly while slamming as 'chaotic mess' the way his case was dealt with.

After a meeting with the Independent Police Complaints Commission, which is investigating the killing of 27-year-old electrician Jean Charles de Menezes, Solicitor Gareth Peirce on Thursday said the case of the killing of the Brazilian so far had been a 'chaotic mess'. She said the family of de Menezes wanted answers quickly.

The Commission, on its part, said the talks had been 'constructive.'

Investigation papers, leaked to ITV News, suggested that the Brazilian was restrained by a surveillance officer before being shot 8 times on July 22, a day after the failed London bombings.

The documents contradict initial eyewitness reports suggesting de Menezes had hurdled a barrier at Stockwell Tube station and was wearing a padded jacket.

"The situation demands something fast for public interest as well as the family's interest," said Peirce. "There has been so much misleading going on from the beginning in this case."

She said the inquiry needed to look at why the police had apparently not corrected any misinformation about the shooting reported in the aftermath.

"There have been lies that have been told and there have been lies that have been allowed to remain uncorrected."
