Earthquakes of moderate intensity on Wednesday rocked Meghalaya, Assam, the north Bengal region and the Andamans.
The first tremor was felt in Meghalaya, Assam and the north Bengal region. It lasted a few seconds and there was no report of loss of life or damage to property, officials at the Seismological Observatory Centre in Shillong said.
The epicentre of the earthquake, measuring 5.5 on the Richter scale, was located at latitude 27.5 degree north and longitude 89.2 degree east somewhere near Bhutan, the centre said.
A report from Siliguri said the tremor was felt across north Bengal and lasted for several seconds.
Its intensity surpassed that of other quakes in recent times but there was no report of any loss from any part of the region.
Another earthquake of moderate intensity was felt in the middle of Andaman sea on Wednesday morning, the Meteorological Department in Delhi said.
The quake, with a magnitude of 5.8 on the Richter scale, occurred at 0953 IST with its epicentre at latitude 13 degrees North and longitude 92.5 degrees East, it said.
In capital Port Blair, the tremor shook the entire city and aftershocks were felt even in Diglipur located at the extreme north of the Andamans.
