Megahlaya: Lapang distributes portfolios

D D Lapang, heading the five-party Meghalaya Democratic Alliance government, has distributed portfolios of his 38-member jumbo sized ministry.

The portfolios, which were distributed on Wednesday, have been given to 28 Cabinet members and 10 ministers of state.

Lapang was sworn in on Tuesday along with his ministers.

The MDA comprises Congress (22), United Democratic Party (9), Meghalaya Democratic Party (4), Hill States People's Democratic Party (2), Khun Hyniewtrep National Awkening Movement (2), and three independents.

The Congress, which emerged as the single largest party, got the maximum number of 14 Cabinet portfolios, while six were made ministers of state. The party also retained important portfolios such as finance, home, revenue, industries and public works department.

Of the nine UDP legislators, eight were given Cabinet ranks and only one was made minister of state.

HSPDP legislator and former chief minister F A Khonglam was made a Cabinet minister.

Out of the two KHNAM legislators, one was given Cabinet rank and the other made minister of state.

Two out of the four MDP members were given Cabinet ranks, while the other was left out of the ministry.

Of the three independents, one was given Cabinet rank while two became ministers of state.

Chief Minister Lapang retained Cabinet affairs, political, personnel, planning, finance, revenue, industries and departments not allotted to other ministers.

Congress minister R G Lyngdoh was allocated home (police) and information and public relations, H D R Lyngdoh general administration department and home (passport), Mukul Sangma taxation, PWD (roads) and information technology, J D Rymbai community and rural development.

The Khasi Students Union President Paul Lyngdoh, the pioneer of the KHNAM, was given sports and youth affairs.

Donkupar Roy of the UDP was given power including non-conventional energy, science and technology and election, while the party's Kyrmen Susngi was allotted horticulture and evolution.

R L Tariang was given education (mass and elementary); Mihsalan Suchaing, higher and technical education; J A Lyngdoh, social welfare and home (jail); Sing Mulieh, forest and environment and B B Nongsiej, food and civil supplies.

While MDP member Martle Mukhim was allocated the portfolio PHE, secretariat administrative department and programme implementation, P T Sawkmie got excise and irrigation and D P Iangjuh was given animal husbandry and veterinary.

F A Khonglam got the portfolios of tourism, administrative reforms and reorganisation.

Independent member P M Syiem was allocated the portfolio of agriculture (excluding horticulture).
