Maya case verdict nothing to do with politics: Khurshid

July 06, 2012 15:11 IST
Law Minister Salman Khurshid on Friday said the Supreme Court order quashing the disproportionate assets case against Bahujan Samaja Party leader Mayawati has nothing to do with politics.

"It is not correct to link it with politics. We all must respect the Supreme Court... It is very very unfair to say that it has anything to do with the politics of the country. The Supreme Court is an autonomous, independent and highly respected institution of our country. It is a constitutional institution and the Supreme Court decides according to its wisdom," he told reporters in New Delhi.

Khurshid further said that the order should not be linked with any political development in the country. "I think to link it with any other motive, or any other relationship, or any other event happening in the country will not be fair at all. Please respect the Supreme Court," he said.

The law minister was replying to a question on BSP's support for United Progressive Alliance's Presidential nominee.

On whether the order pointed towards misuse of the CBI by the government, he said, "That is for the Supreme Court to decide. We only go by its decision."

Terming the apex order as the "last word on law", he said the decision by it has to be accepted by everyone.  "This is a judgment of the highest court, what more one can say. One can only say that it is the judgment of the highest court that applies to everybody," Khurshid said.

He said the government will look into the order for further details.

"The decision has to be accepted, there cannot be any decision bigger than that of the Supreme Court. If any order or suggestions has been given to us then we will consider it. Any action required on that, we will take it," he said
