Top Manipur militant killed in New Delhi

November 12, 2007 21:25 IST

The chief of the outlawed Kuki Revolutionary Army (KRA) of Manipur died under mysterious circumstances at his brother's rented house on Monday morning.

Thangkeng Hangshingh, 35, was attacked on his head with a hammer at around 1 am at his brother David's flat in Sriniwaspuri in south Delhi, but the attacker has not been identified yet, a senior police officer said.

Refuting allegations that Hangshingh was shot dead by Manipur Rifles, the officer said the post-mortem report noted that the militant was hit on his head by a hammer.

"The attackers are yet to be identified. We have recovered a blood-stained hammer from the house," he said. Hangshingh was staying along with five others, including David, on  the top floor of the building.

Some neighbours claimed that at around 1.15 am, they heard a knock on the door and found David, with hands tied behind, seeking help. When one of them tried to go to the top floor to enquire, David prevented him and also requested him not to inform the police.

By this time David succeeded in freeing himself and went upstairs, the officer said. A bleeding person was seen taken in an autorickshaw. The police said doctors at AIIMS declared Hangshingh as brought dead.

KRA, responsible for kidnapping a number of bureaucrats in Manipur, is fighting for a separate homeland for the Kuki tribe.
