Maharashtra CM briefs PM about Mumbai violence

August 14, 2012 15:28 IST

Maharashtra Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan on Tuesday met Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and briefed him about the violence in Mumbai following protests against Assam riots.

Chavan met the prime minister at his office in Parliament to explain the steps taken by his government to control the violence that broke out in Mumbai after a rally on Saturday to protest the killings of Muslims in Assam.

"I met the prime minister to brief him about the violence in Mumbai and the action taken by the government," he said.

Chavan had reportedly sought an intelligence probe to ascertain the conspiracy angle in the incident, which claimed two lives and left 54 people injured.

He will also meet Home Minister Sushilkumar Shinde and other central leaders during his visit to Mumbai.

Chavan appeared dismissive about the Opposition's demands for the removal of Maharashtra Home Minister R R Patil.
