Lucknow painted blue for Kanshi Ram's birth anniv

March 14, 2011 20:38 IST

The ruling Bahujan Samaj Party in Uttar Pradesh is painting Lucknow blue on the eve of the 77th birth anniversary of party founder and chief minister Mayawati's political mentor, Kanshi Ram.

Lucknow's main thoroughfares are flanked for miles with blue hoardings announcing the big event of March 15. Even hoardings carrying advertisements of different brands and companies have been literally hijacked by the ruling party to celebrate Kanshi Ram's birth anniversary.

Not only the sprawling Kanshi Ram Memorial spread across a newly-developed 190- acre park has been given a blue hue, but even other

monuments and statues erected by Mayawati in honour of different BSP icons were covered under canopies of blue lights.

Countless buntings, banners and posters can be seen hanging down from every lamp-post along the major thoroughfares, each emboldened with the names of party functionaries sponsoring the display.

However, unlike the big bash on Mayawati's 55th birthday on January 15, her mentor's birth anniversary was going to be a sober affair. While no public function was planned, the chief minister would offer flowers at the Kanshi Ram memorial at 10 am, said an official spokesman.
