Low intensity earthquake hits MP and Chhattisgarh

Mild tremors were felt in the bordering districts of Chhattisgarh and Madhya Pradesh on Thursday morning.

No loss of life or property has been reported so far.

Mild shocks were experienced at nearly 8.03 am in Sarguja division of Chhattisgarh and Jabalpur-Umaria-Shahdol area of Madhya Pradesh.

The epicentre of the earthquake, of magnitude 5 on the Richter scale, was about 150 km from Jabalpur division, said Raipur Met office director M L Sahu.

"It appears to be a low intensity earthquake with its epicentre nearly 150 km away from Jabalpur," said a scientist-in-charge of the observatory at Bargi hills, near Jabalpur.

A report from Shahdol said the earthquake lasted for nearly 20-30 seconds, forcing people to come out of their houses in Shahdol-Annoppur area.
