A salute to a US commander

Last updated on: May 24, 2006 18:14 IST

US Pacific Fleet commander Admiral Gary Roughead inspects a Navy Guard of Honour at INS Angre, the logistics base of the Western Naval Command in Mumbai on Wednesday.

Admiral Roughead, who arrived from Delhi after meeting Defence Minister Pranab Mukherjee and the Indian Navy chief, Admiral Arun Prakash, is in India to discuss greater interaction between the two navies and speed up the proposed Indo-US Maritime Cooperation Framework.

Roughead spent two-and-a-half years of his childhood in Mumbai where his father, an US oil company executive, was posted. "I was there from two-and-a-half to five. I was very young. All I remember is that the house we lived in seemed huge. I was very much taken in by the vastness and the beauty of the surroundings," he recalled.
