In times gone by, wars were fought with swords and cannons. Today fighter aircraft, submarines and tanks are the weapons of choice.

But have you heard of a war where the weapons are tomatoes?

That's exactly what large number of people in Madrid, Spain, did a few days back.

Thousands pelted tonnes of ripe tomatoes on each other in one of the most muddled summer party in Spain.

The festival of "Tomatina" is known for its tomato fight fiesta in the village of Bunol. Every year on the last Wednesday of August the festival takes place.

It is said to have started in the 1940s when a clutch of youths began throwing their lunch at each other one day in a downtown square. They met again the following year, this time pelting passersby as well and giving birth to the now legendary food fight.

More than 30,000 people waged an hour-long food fight, bathing themselves, the walls and the streets with almost 140 tons of tomatoes.

People literally swam in tomato puree with only their heads peeking out of the sea of red mush.

The Townhall set up 500 makeshift showers for the people to clean up and many bathed in the river.

Tourist from far off countries had come to watch the event.
