A Delhi court, relying mainly on the testimony of the nine-year-old son of the deceased, who was also an eye-witness, today sentenced a man to life imprisonment for stabbing his wife to death in East Delhi four years ago.

"The statement of their child was corroborated by solid and unflappable medical evidence," said Additional Sessions Judge J M Malik, convicting Bali Mohammed for killing his wife.

The court also imposed a fine of Rs 2000 on the convict after finding him guilty under Section 302 (murder) of IPC.

As per the prosecution, the convict, a vegetable vendor and a resident of Ghaziabad, used to physically assault his wife, as she had been opposing his drinking habit.

The fight came to a head on the morning of July 3, 2001 when Mohammed, after bringing his wife Yasmin and his three children to his grandfather's house at Rajeev Nagar in East Delhi, gave her several scissor blows in the stomach.

The victim died on the spot and their minor son, Ali Mohammed, who witnessed the incident, supported the prosecution story. The prosecution examined 25 witnesses to prove their case.
