February 11, 2006 16:38 IST
The situation was tense but under control in twin districts of Kargil and Leh, which witnessed widespread violence following reports of alleged desecration of Quran at a mosque, and there was no relaxation in curfew imposed since Thursday, official sources said.

No untoward incidents were reported since Friday evening in Leh and Kargil and curfew continued in both towns, the sources said adding civil and police officials were monitoring the situation continuously.

Kargil town was brought under curfew Friday after an irate mob set ablaze the residence of a Deputy Superintendent of Police.

Violence erupted in the Ladakh region early this week following allegations of desecration of the Quran in Bodh Kharboo area of Kargil district on Monday.

Buddhists and Muslims clashed at several places in both Leh and Kargil towns, forcing the authorities to seek help of army, ITBP and CRPF in maintaining law and order.
