Last updated on: October 13, 2004 13:36 IST

The government has asked Central Board of Film Certification chief Anupam Kher to step down.

Kher, appointed by the previous National Democratic Alliance government, received a letter from the information and broadcasting ministry in this regard.

When contacted in Mumbai, Kher declined to comment, but sources close to him said that he actor would not resign.

He would rather have the government sack him as he felt that the directive was tantamount to questioning his credibility, the sources said.

"I have not received any official communication still... I will be addressing a press conference in this regard in New Delhi tomorrow," Kher said.
