Kani arrested for no fault, says 'hurt' Karuna

May 20, 2011 19:18 IST

Upset over the arrest of Kanimozhi in 2G scam, Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam chief M Karunanidhi on Friday said he was in a position like that of any father whose daughter faced a similar situation for no fault of hers and said the party general council would decide on future ties with Congress.

"I am in a position like any other father who has a daughter and was arrested for no fault of her," 87-year-old Karunanidhi told mediapersons in Chennai.

Emerging from a meeting with senior DMK leaders at his and Kanimozhi's CIT Colony residence, he said he would consult legal experts on moving the Delhi High Court for securing bail for her.

Asked whether the party's ties with Congress would remain intact, Karunanidhi, avoiding a direct reply, said his party would have good relations with all parties.

On whether Friday's development would have an impact on the future relations between the two UPA partners, he said his party's general council alone could take a decision.

"As and when necessary, its meeting ill be convened. I cannot take a decision on my own on this."

Replying to another question, he ruled out his immediate visit to Delhi. Kanimozhi was arrested and sent to Tihar Jail after a special CBI court rejected her bail plea.

On DMK's defeat in assembly elections, he said "the people have given me proper rest, though I did not want it."

Earlier, Kanimozhi's mother Rajathi Ammal left for Delhi. She was seen sobbing when she arrived at the airport in Chennai.

The Congress on Friday said the arrest of DMK MP and M Karunanidhi's daughter Kanimozhi in the 2G spectrum allocation case will not have any impact on the UPA coalition.

"There is going to be absolutely no impact on the coalition" due to the development, party spokesman Abhishek Singhvi told reporters.

Singhvi, who was subjected to a volley of questions on the issue, insisted that it was not appropriate for a political party to comment on the orders of judiciary in such cases.

"It is a matter between the accused persons, relevant courts and the lawyers concerned," he said, adding that appropriate legal remedies are available to all the parties.

He denied suggestions that his response in the matter was 'cold' like a lawyer despite the fact that the DMK has been an ally of the Congress for the last seven years in the UPA.

A senior party leader, who declined to be identified, said that the arrest of Kanimozhi was 'not an unexpected development' in the present atmosphere when several others allegedly involved in the 2G scam have already been detained.

Seeking to dismiss the talk that the DMK could sever ties with the UPA in such a "difficult" situation, he said on the other hand the "question being asked to us is why you have not broken ties with the DMK? Why you are married to DMK and not AIADMK?"
