Seer case: Framing of charges deferred

Last updated on: July 12, 2005 20:18 IST

The framing of charges in the Sankararaman murder case, in which Shankaracharya Jayendra Saraswathi and his junior Vijayendra Saraswathi are the main accused, was deferred to July 25 on Tuesday.

The Chengalpattu court adjourned in view of the statewide strike by lawyers to protest against the amendments to the Criminal Procedure Code.

Jayendra Saraswathi, his junior Vijayendra Saraswathi and 22 others are facing charges for the murder of a local temple manager Sankararaman on September 3 last year.

Meanwhile, Kanchi Shankaracharya Jayendra Saraswathi has moved the court seeking discharge from the Sankararaman murder case.

Besides hearing the discharge petition on July 25, the court would also take up another petition by the seer seeking adjournment of the trial in the Sankararaman murder case.

The seer has sought the transfer of the case to a court outside Tamil Nadu. The plea is pending before the Supreme Court.

On Tuesday, another accused Kuruvi Ravi also filed a petition seeking discharge from the case. All 24 accused were present in the court.
