May 25, 2008 13:47 IST

The celebrated Pakistani rock band, Junoon is in Srinagar to perform live, to promote peace and harmony.

Invited by the Indian chapter of South Asian Foundation, the band will perform on Sunday afternoon at the Sheri Kashmir International Conference Centre on the shores of the Dal Lake to imbue vigour "into the regional cooperation and peace using the medium of culture."

The entry of the rock band is not the first arrival into the Valley of a Pakistani cultural troupe, as Kashmir has played host to large number of  Pakistan's famed singers with identical mission of "promoting peace and cooperation through cultural activities."

The band which arrived on Friday, have been enjoying the scenic splendor of the Valley and its climate. Temperatures in the Valley have been below normal for last ten days, which has been attributed to the routine heavy  showers in the evening.

The members of the band say their aim is to "promote peace and harmony".

"We sing songs of unity, peace, joy and brotherhood and this seems to be the perfect setting for those songs," lead singer Salman Ahmad said. "I am happy and proud to be part of Junoon and the message we are sending is peace and harmony. We have been longing to perform here, and it is a dream come true," Ahmad said.
