The Jammu-Srinagar national highway was reopened for one way traffic after overnight heavy snowfall had blocked it.

The chief engineer, border roads organisation, which maintains the highway, said that massive snow clearing operation was launched early on Saturday to clear the 25-km stretch on either side of the Jawahar tunnel.

"There was heavy snowfall last (Friday) night. We pressed our men and machinery early morning to clear the highway for one way traffic, chief engineer BRO Brigadier, TPS Rawat said.

The Valley was lashed by yet another snowfall on Friday and Saturday morning. The snowfall and the accompanying rains were sporadic.

However, the MET office has forecast another low to moderate snowfall in the next 48 hours.

The divisional administration has already geared up the administrative units across the Valley to meet any eventuality that may crop up with the snowfall.

The Valley experienced multiple snowfalls and a cold winter this January after more than a decade, which led to an assortment of problems on account of shortages of potable water, electricity, LPG and essential commodities.

The winter, however, caused no civilian casualties even though seven army and paramilitary border security force (BSF) troopers were buried under an avalanche in north Kashmir Keran sector.

The body of one BSF sub-inspector has been recovered so far, where as six other bodies still lay buried.
