Jammu and Kashmir Education Minister Peerzada Mohammad Sayeed on Friday resigned from his post on Friday after the state crime branch submitted its report to Chief Minister Omar Abdullah confirming the use of unfair means to help Sayeed's son clear his secondary school examination in 2009.

He has sent his resignation to Congress President Sonia Gandhi.

The scandal was exposed by a local newspaper, which carried the facsimile of the answer sheets of the Urdu paper of Sayeed's son Imam Souban written in two hand writings.

The crime branch enquiry apart from confirming use of malpractices, had indicted officials of the state Board of School Education and state education department in manipulating the success of the minister's son in the board exam.

Interestingly, the minister's son also cleared his 12th class exam, the results of which were declared last week, securing a distinction.

The state chief minister had on Thursday announced in New Delhi that the fate of the minister would be decided in 24 hours.

The minister, however, did not submit his resignation to the chief minister, but forwarded it to Sonia Gandhi.

Sayeed was forced to resign by the then chief minister, Ghulam Nabi Azad following an allegation made by a then sitting MLA that his wife had demanded a bribe of Rs 40,000 from him in 2008.
