Jharkhand shame! Couple forced to eat excreta

July 16, 2012 16:14 IST

In a throwback to medieval times, an elderly couple were accused of witchcraft by a village panchayat and forced to eat their excreta and drink urine in Jharkhand's Latehar district.

65-year-old Robert Lakra and his 60-year-old wife Colestina were blamed for the sudden death of cows, buffaloes and goats in June at Puro village and taken forcibly before the panchayat on July 8, Superintendent of Police Kranti Kumar told media persons on Monday.

When the couple denied that they practised witchcraft, they were made to eat their excreta and drink urine as per the diktat of the panchayat, Kumar said.

"An FIR against 11 persons was lodged today after we got the information about the incident," the SP said.
