Syed Gul Mohammed Shah, one of the two Indians convicted by a Manhattan court for credit card fraud, has arrived in New Delhi after being deported from the United States, his family said in Hyderabad.

Shah's mother, Gul Begum, told rediff.com on Monday that her son had called up.

"He said he is doing fine by the grace of Allah. He informed that he is staying with a friend in Delhi... he would be in Hyderabad in two or three days. I hope to see him by Wednesday [January 1]," she said.

Shah and his friend from Hyderabad, Mohammed Azmath Jaweed, were initially believed to be prime suspects in the 9/11 attacks. They were arrested from a train in Texas on September 12, 2001, after box cutters and several thousand dollars were found in their bags.

Though they were cleared of links to terrorism, both men were held in a prison in Brooklyn and charged with credit card fraud.

Shah alias Ayub Ali Khan was sentenced to a jail term of one year and one day in August this year and ordered to pay restitution of $ 415,000. Jaweed was sentenced to a prison term of nine months in September and directed to pay $ 74,000 in restitution.

Subsequently, both of them were released and handed over to the Immigration and Naturalisation Service.

Meanwhile, Hyderabad city police, which has booked cases against Shah and Jaweed for furnishing wrong information while obtaining their Indian passports, are waiting to proceed against the duo.

Cases have been registered at the Hussaini Alam police station under Section 12 of the Indian Passport Act and Section 420 (cheating) of the Indian Penal Code.
