Iran's top nuke negotiator in Delhi

February 25, 2004 18:40 IST

Iran's top nuclear negotiator and leader of the Supreme National Council Hasan Rohani arrived in Delhi on Wednesday for talks with Indian leaders on a host of bilateral, regional and international issues.

Rohani will on Thursday call on Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee and have a meeting with National Security Adviser Brajesh Mishra.

Iran's nuclear programme has been under international scrutiny and came under intense public focus after Pakistan's top nuclear scientist Abdul Qadeer Khan confessed to black marketing sensitive nuclear technology to Iran, besides Libya and North Korea.

Tehran said last November that it would suspend its uranium enrichment activities, sign additional protocol to the nuclear Non Proliferation Treaty and continue to cooperate with the International Atomic Energy Agency even before it is ratified by its Parliament.

Iran's decision to allow inspections by IAEA and sign the protocol ended the standoff with the UN body, which cast doubts on the peaceful nature of its nuclear programme.
