Indian-origin top-cop Dal Babu, Borough Commander for Harrow in the UK, has been honoured by Queen Elizabeth II and made to an Order of the British Empire for his services to policing and the community.

Chief Superintendent Dal Babu was given the award for services to the police and community after 27 years on the Met Police force. He was named in the Queen's Birthday Honours list. Babu is the Borough Commander for Harrow.

Expressing his gratitude, Babu, an NRI, said: "I'm extremely grateful and humbled to receive this award, which I believe has only been possible thanks to the support of my police colleagues, the community and my family.

He dedicated his award to his late mother.

"My one sadness is that my mother and father, who were the most inspirational and remarkable people I have ever known are not alive today to share this moment with me personally."

My life and two daughters share their spirit and depth of character and as one of ten children and the son of immigrants from India, I could have only dreamed of being a Chief Superintendent, let alone the Borough Commander of Harrow - the most diverse borough in the United Kingdom, Babu said.

"The Metropolitan Police Service has changed in a very positive way in the last 26 years and I have benefited from some remarkable opportunities to work with some of the most able and talented people around. I look forward to continuing to serve our communities and the Metropolitan Police Service, Babu added.

Since joining the service in 1983 Babu has fulfilled a number of different roles in both specialist and borough environments, such as Camden, Enfield and Tower Hamlets.

In 2009, he was promoted to Borough Commander for Harrow where he has responsibility for the provision for a range of local policing services to a diverse community.

His work around social cohesion with the Muslim communities and young people has been innovative and ground break, sources said.
