Indian girl killed in mid-air collision in Australia

An 18-year-old Indian girl was killed when her plane collided mid-air in Sydney's west on Friday.

Chandrika Gaur was depressed off late as she was not doing much of flying, Eddy Omeissah, owner of an airport cafe, said.

'I made her a coffee this morning and she was joking around about getting married and having kids. She was 18, very pure, nice girl, very well mannered, from a privileged background,' Omeissah was quoted as saying in The Age.

He added, 'Both her parents are doctors in India. She was very quiet, subdued. But she had such a pretty face she had get away with being quiet, you know. She didn't say she was going to fly or not (today). There's a lack of aeroplanes there for the number of students. So they never knew when they were going to fly or not,' Omeissah said.

'She was depressed recently as she was not doing much flying,' Omeissah, who had befriended the trainee pilot, said.

'Now look how fate treats her,' he added.

According to the Sydney Morning Herald, Gaur and her instructor, Joanne Ethell were flying in their Cessna 152 when it collided mid-air with a Liberty XL2. It was flown by Ken Andrews, 89, a World War II Spitfire pilot. He was teaching a 25-year-old male trainee.

The moment of collision was captured on the radar tracking Australia's radar tracking system. The two planes can be seen flying east above the M5 motorway, when the Cessna 152 slips beneath the Liberty.
