Indian Consulate in Canada receives bomb threat

The Indian Consulate at Toronto reportedly received a bomb threat on January 30.

Though no official confirmation was available, a police official, who didn't want to be named, revealed that the Indian Consulate had received a threatening telephone call on January 30.

 "We are investigating this incident. Even if it is just a crank call, we have to probe the matter," he told rediff.com.

However, Consul-General Preeti Saran dismissed the threat as 'some crank call' and stressed that "it is not of any significance."

According to Sri Lankan Consul-General Bandula Jaysekara, the threat call could have been made by a supporter of the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam. He explained that the pro-LTTE group might target the Indian Consulate as the "Indian government is supporting the Sri Lankan government. India would never support any kind of terrorism".

Recently, some Sri Lankan Tamil demonstrators had forced their way inside the Sri Lankan Consulate in Toronto and created a ruckus there.

According to sources, the police were not ruling out any possibilities while probing the origins of the threat call.
