'N-weapons proliferation affected India's security'

Noting that proliferation of nuclear weapons with links across regions has affected its own security, India on Tuesday asked the international community to pay greater attention to such dangers in the backdrop of North Korean atomic test.

At the Inter-Parliamentary Union session on the North Korean nuclear test, New Delhi also rejected a clause in a draft resolution which asked countries not party to the Non-Proliferation Treaty to accede to it as a non-nuclear weapon state and said that it marked deviation from the matter under consideration.

"The nuclear test by DPR Korea highlights the dangers of clandestine proliferation. It highlights the threat posed by proliferation links across regions," Rajya Sabha Deputy Chairman K Rahman Khan, heading the Indian delegation, said while addressing the IPU session.

"Such proliferation links have affected our own security environment adversely," he said adding, the international community needs to pay greater attention to the dangers of such proliferation.

He said India was deeply concerned at the North Korean test, which was conducted in "violation of its international commitments, jeopardising peace, stability and security on the Korean peninsula and in the Asian region."

The IPU has been holding a three-day session since Monday to hold emergency discussions on 'the announcement by the DPRK of its nuclear weapons test and the strengthening of nuclear non-proliferation regime'.
