West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Friday claimed that incidents of rape in the state was much less than in other metropolitan cities as evident from 'Crime of India' for the year 2012.

Banerjee told the assembly while there were 585 rape cases in Delhi, 232 in Mumbai, 94 in Chennai and 90 in Bangalore, it was 68 in Kolkata. She said there was decrease of 3.1 per cent in crimes against women in 2013.

The chief minister said 23,818 incidents of crime against women were directly recorded at police stations in 2013 as against 24,590 cases reported in 2012.           The government had decided to set up 65 women police stations in a phased manner, Banerjee said while replying to the debate on budgetary demands for grants for the home department held by her.

She said 19 human rights courts were established along with eight Central Bureau of Investigation courts, 46 courts for women and 88 fast tracks courts were working in the state.

Responding to the opposition charges that infighting in the Trinamool Congress was posing a law and order problem, she said she never tolerated it. Even today she got three people arrested from Malda where there was a clash between two groups belonging to the Trinamool Congress, Banerjee said.

The budgetary demands amounting to Rs 4919,69,72,000 crore were passed by the house by voice vote.
