Two HIV positive persons got married in Chennai on Friday in order to spread the message that people with AIDS can get married and lead a normal life.

This morning, under the aegis of a non-governmental organisation, South Indian Positive Network, Radhakrishnan, 32, a mechanical engineer and Elizabeth, 26, a widow, entered into wedlock in a simple ceremony at the NGO's office at suburban Paravellore. Elizabeth was married to a lorry driver, who died after being afflicted with AIDS several months ago.

SIPN Project coordinator M Elango told PTI that Radhakrishnan and Elizabeth had met each other in April at a function in the city and they met again at a training camp at Andipatti.

Radhakrishnan now works as a social worker at 'Kancheepuram Positive Network' among HIV positive persons and Elizabeth is a SIPN employee, Elango said.

"Being HIV+ does not mean we are not entitled to our desires. We also have dreams and aspirations," Elizabeth said.

Elango said SIPN had conducted seven such marriages in the past.

"Our message is to create a clear awareness that HIV positive people can also lead a normal life. Our role is to identify positive people and promote family support," he said.
