Highlights from 1st day of Budget session

The Budget session of Parliament is all set for a stormy start on Tuesday with major opposition parties planning to corner the government on the Jawaharlal Nehru University issue and other issues as Congress President Sonia Gandhi accused it of launching a planned attack on freedom of expression.

Sonia Gandhi has accused the Modi government of having “lost all sense of balance” and undermining democratic norms over the JNU row, making it clear that Congress will take up the issue aggressively along with like-minded parties in the Budget session.

Here are the highlights as of now:

President Pranab Mukherjee is addressing both Houses of Parliament at the start of the Budget session. ‘My government’s philosophy is captured in the idea 'Sabka Saath, Sabka Vikas’

The government in particular is focused on ‘Garibon Ki Unnati’, ‘Kisano Ki Samridhi’ and ‘Yuvaon Ka Rozgar’, says the president

Overriding goal of my government is poverty eradication. Gandhi ji had said “Poverty is the worst kind of violence”

The government is committed to the philosophy of ‘per drop, more crop’

“I wish that the Parliament session will be fruitful and there is constructive criticism as well,” PM Modi said after reaching the Parliament. “The entire country will be watching the Budget Session. The Opposition must let Parliament function,” Modi said

Speaking ahead of the session, Parliamentary Affairs Minister Venkaiah Naidu said that the government was ready to discuss all issues -- whether it is JNU, Hyderabad University, Pathankot or Jat reservation.
