Mortality rate due to heart ailments rising in India

Good thoughts, nice food habits and routine exercises can keep heart diseases at bay, SRM University Chancellor T R Pachamuthu said on Friday.

Inaugurating an interactive session on 'Heart Diseases and Prevention'' between public and heart specialists organised by the SRM Medical College Hospital and Research Centre to mark the World Heart Day, he said the mortality rate in India due to heart problems has been on the rise.

"From three per cent it grew to 12 per cent and it is expected to rise to 20 per cent in future. The number of people with heart-related ailments is alarming and is fast catching up with diabetes," he added.

This interactive session was aimed at creating awareness on the prevention of heart diseases.

"These aspects will give one person a stress-free life," he said and added the SRM Medical College Hospital will soon equip the cardiothoracic department with all types of equipments, including setting up of cath labs, in the next three to five months.

About 10 renowned heart specialists who participated in the interactive session in which the faculty and students of the SRM Medical College Hospital were enlightened about heart diseases and its prevention.
