June 29, 2012 14:31 IST

Bima Bharti, a member of Legislative Assembly from Bihar, has opposed the bail petition of her husband Awadhesh Mandal, a gangster and history-sheeter.

Bharti has informed the court that she no longer wants to live with him as she fears for her life, police officials said on Friday.

Bharti is a Janata Dal – United MLA from Rupauli in Purnia district. She opposed the bail petition of Mandal, who is currently behind bars in connection with his alleged high-handedness with some health officials recently.

Bharti told the court of Additional District and Sessions Judge Hasan Nawaz, during the hearing of the bail petition of Mandal, that the real threat to her life was from her husband.

Bharti told rediff.com over the phone on Friday, "I have decided not to live with him any more. I will be killed by him."

She said that she had lodged an FIR against Mandal under various sections of the Indian Penal Code at Bhawanipur police station on June 1.

She said that in December 2010, she was brutally beaten up, first in her flat at Patna and then at her village home, by Mandal. She had been rescued by the Purnia police. Later, her husband Awadhesh Mandal and his accomplices were arrested.
