Haryana's top police official on Wednesday said that all aspects of the recent murders by a gang of robbers posing as cab drivers would be thoroughly probed and steps would be initiated to prevent such incidents.

"The police was sad, sorry and surprised over how a gang of nine persons could kill 29 persons just for the sake of money," Director-General of Police R S Dalal said.

A 10-member gang, which operated cabs illegally between Dhaula Kuan in Delhi and Jaipur, used to ferry passengers waiting on the roadside.

At night, a member of the gang, posing as the conductor, would lure a lone passenger to sit in the cab. Five or six other gang members will also be in the cab, pretending to be passengers.

They would then strangle the lone passenger, while the others caught hold of his hands and legs, the police alleged.

The gang would then rob whatever valuable was available and dump the body at some remote place.

The gang, led by 20-year-old Pramod, had confessed before the police that they had committed at least 27 murders in one year.

They killed 12 persons in October alone, it is alleged.

The gang is also supposed to have confessed that on one occasion, they got a mere Rs 2 from a passenger after murdering him.

The gang members are aged between 13 and 25.

"I had directed the Inspector-General of Police, Gurgaon Range, Mohinder Lal to conduct an inquiry into how the local police stations were hoodwinked," he added.

The state police would establish more police stations to provide better and efficient services. Seven more police stations in Gurgaon and six in Faridabad would be operational within a month, the police said.

The police would now focus more on the National Capital Region of the state, the officer said.

The police had also spoken to senior officials of the state for carving out a police station in each sector being developed by the Haryana Urban Development Authority in the future, he added.
