September 28, 2012 17:47 IST

In a daring daylight robbery, armed men on Friday decamped with the cash van of a private bank from a posh south Delhi locality, after waylaying the vehicle and shooting its guard.

Four men in a car waylaid the cash van of an agency, filling ATMs of ICICI bank, in the posh Defence Colony area. They then opened fire at the guard and fled with the vehicle, which is believed to be carrying nearly Rs five crore.

The robbers left their car bearing a Haryana registration number -- HR 26 AQ 0051 -- at the spot.

They also abandoned the van in Hauz Rani Area in Malviya Nagar, a few km away. No cash was found inside the van.

The injured guard has been rushed to AIIMS where he is undergoing treatment. Doctors said his condition is serious.

Senior police officials, including Joint Commissioner (South-West) Vivek Gogia, rushed to the spot.
